Logitech® Ultrathin Keyboard Smart Cover

Logitech announced a new keyboard accessory for the new, third-generation iPad® and iPad 2: the Logitech® Ultrathin Keyboard Cover.

Extra sleek and thin, the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover is a stylish, aluminum screen cover that protects your iPad screen and features a built-in keyboard that pairs through Bluetooth. It attaches securely to your iPad with a magnetic clip and its built-in stand holds your iPad at the best angle, whether typing or watching a movie. The ultra-slim keyboard cover also has an instant On/Off feature, which automatically wakes up your iPad when you open the cover, and puts it on standby when you close it.
Keyboard function keys offer enhanced navigation, and a piano-black finish adds style. All this and it’s just as thin as your iPad.

It's best to "dock" your iPad

Having seen this keyboard/case a few weeks ago online I'd been waiting for it to finally be released. I was fortunate that the Best Buy local to my current client had one in stock this evening.

First off I will say this kayboard will change how I use the iPad. I've been considering getting a Macbook Air for use while chatting with friends and doing e-mail and documents. This keyboard has eliminated that need for me and I couldn't be happier with the quality of the product.

Hands-on with the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover (video)

Summary: This keyboard turns the iPad into the thinnest and lightest laptop ever produced. It has already become my favorite keyboard for the new iPad.
I write over a thousand words a day, every single day, many of those on my iPad. That’s only possible by using an external physical keyboard. There are some good ones available, and this brand new one is the best I’ve tried so far.
The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover combines the Apple Smart Cover with a full keyboard. The single unit from Logitech is thinner than the new iPad, and weighs only a few ounces. It attaches to the iPad using the same magnetic hinge used by the Smart Cover.

Logitech's Ultrathin Keyboard Cover makes the right compromises

As more and more people are using the iPad for quote-real-unquote work, iPad keyboards are becoming popular accessories, offering the tactile advantages of real keys without sacrificing the iPad’s portability and touchscreen interface. Back in December, I wrote our iPad keyboards buying guide based on my testing of approximately three dozen keyboards, but a number of new models have been released since then. One of the best is Logitech’s $100 Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for the second- and third-generation iPad. Despite its confusing name—no, it’s not a cover for your keyboard—the Ultrathin Keyboard Cover (which I’ll call the Ultrathin from here on out) is a solid keyboard that mostly makes the right compromises between portability and functionality.

Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover review

When it comes to the iPad the only things more ubiquitous than Twitter clients are keyboard covers or cases. I won’t say they are a dime a dozen because these keyboard case/covers  are a little more expensive than that, but there are certainly a number of varieties for you to choose from from makers like Logitech, Kensington, Zagg, Belkin, and others. With the launch of the new iPad there was quite a bit of consternation over whether or not these accessories designed for the iPad 2 would work with the slightly bulkier new iPad. In some instances that consternation proved a moot point for those who had made investments. Certainly, though, for those who had not yet picked up a keyboard case, all you needed to do was wait for versions targeted towards the new iPad.

Logitech attemps to make iPad keyboards more portable

One of the iPad's main weaknesses has always been productivity. It's not a question of apps; while it has taken a little time for a native iPad library to develop, there's usually been some way of getting essential tasks done. It's that even with those apps, the iPad's technical limitations can make things unnecessarily difficult. Bluetooth keyboards can simplify writing, but options have so far been limited to either separate peripherals or full-sized cases, which carry their own tradeoffs. Logitech's Ultrathin Keyboard Cover attempts to bridge that gap -- in our review, we'll judge whether the gear is as convenient as its maker hopes it is.
